The Rating System

Everyone has their own rating system when it comes to anything. Do their ratings determine whether a video game is good or bad? No of course not, but it is the first thing you see when researching a video game. These ratings can leave an impression on a person and ultimately be the deciding factor in the purchase. My rating will be based on 5 important factors. These 5 factors will be individually rated and then calculated into a final score. These 5 factors are Entertainment, Impact, Idea, Graphics, and Playability.

Entertainment

The Entertainment Rating focuses on aspects of the game that contribute to its overall enjoyment and engagement for players. This would include an analysis of the Game's Plot, Storytelling Techniques, Character Development, and Immersion.

 

The Game's Plot is analyzed through complexity, depth, and originality. How intricate and layered is the plot? Does the story offer twists and turns, subplots? How well are these elements integrated?

 

The Storytelling Techniques are analyzed through narrative structure, pacing, dialogue, cutscenes, and in-game events. Is the story linear, non-linear, or branching? Does this structure impact the player's experience? Is there a good balance between action and exposition? Are there moments of tension and relief that keep the player engaged? Is the dialogue natural? Does the dialogue include wit, depth, and emotional impact? Are the cutscenes and in-game events well-executed and do they contribute to the narrative?

 

The Character Development is analyzed through protagonists, antagonists, supporting characters, character arcs, and the player's connection to the characters. Are the characters well-developed and multidimensional? What are their motivations, strengths, and flaws? Do the supporting characters add depth to the story? How well are they integrated into the plot and the main character's journey? Are the character developments believable and satisfying? Do their arcs contribute to the overall narrative? Are the characters relatable and memorable?

 

The Immersion is analyzed through world-building, consistency, believability, and player influence. Does the world have its own history, lore, and rules that make it feel alive? Are there any plot holes or inconsistencies that take away from the experience? Are there meaningful player choices and consequences? How do these consequences affect the narrative and endings?

 

This section will provide a clear idea of what to expect in terms of enjoyment and engagement from the game.

Graphics

The Graphics Rating focuses on evaluating the visual aspects of the game. This would include an analysis of the game's Visual Quality, Art Style & Design, and Technical Performance.

The Visual Quality is analyzed through resolution and detail. How is the clarity and sharpness of the visuals? How detailed are the character models, environments, textures, and objects?

​

The Art Style & Design is analyzed through artistic direction and creativity/originality. What is the game's art style? Is the style realistic, stylized, cartoonish, or abstract? How does the style fit the game's theme and atmosphere? What unique or creative visual elements stand out?

​

The Technical Performance is analyzed through the graphics engine. What is the graphics engine used and how well does it perform? How smooth are the animations? What is the frame rate? Are there any noticeable issues like screen tearing or lag?

​

This section will provide a clear understanding of the game's visual quality and how it contributes to the overall gaming experience. 

Idea

The Idea Rating focuses on understanding the inspiration behind the game, its innovative features, and what sets it apart from other titles. This would include an analysis of the game's Core ConceptCreative Vision, and the Unique Elements that define it.

The Core Concept is analyzed through the fundamental premise. What are the game's setting, main objectives, and central themes? 

The Creative Vision is analyzed through the developer's inspiration, goals, and messages. What inspired the developers to create the game? Were they influenced by literature, films, other games, or real-world events? What are the primary goals and messages the developers want to convey through the game?

The Unique Elements are analyzed through unique features and comparison with genre norms. What are the innovative gameplay mechanics, story elements, or artistic approaches that make the game stand out? How does the game's idea compare to other games in the genre? How does the game diverge from established norms?

This section will provide a clear understanding of the game's creative foundation and unique visions. This will help players appreciate what makes the game special and worth playing.

Impact

The Impact Rating is a unique rating that focuses on the lasting influence the game will have on players. This would include an analysis of Emotional ImpactIntellectual Impact, and Overall Impact.

The Emotional Impact is analyzed through emotional engagement and memorable moments. Does the game make the player feel joy, sadness, excitement, tension, or empathy? Are there memorable moments that will leave a lasting impression?

The Intellectual Impact is analyzed through mental stimulation and narrative depth. Does the game challenge the player's thinking and problem-solving skills? How do the game's story, themes, and character development contribute to its intellectual engagement?

​

The Overall Impact is analyzed through personal enjoyment and long-term impact. Does the game provide overall enjoyment and satisfaction? Will the game change perspectives, inspire creativity, or leave a lasting mark?

This section will provide a clear understanding of how the game may affect the player. This will help players decide if they will find the game meaningful. 

Playability

The Playability Rating focuses on how user-friendly, enjoyable, and accessible the game is. This would include an analysis of the game's Game Mechanics & ControlsUser Interface, and Game Difficulty

The Game Mechanics & Controls are analyzed through responsiveness and complexity. Are the controls easy to learn and easy to use? Are the game mechanics straightforward or do they require a steep learning curve?

The User Interface is analyzed through clarity & accessibility and customization. Is it easy to navigate menus, access options, and understand HUD elements? Can players adjust settings to their preferences?

The Game Difficulty is analyzed through difficulty levels and balancing. Does the game cater to both casual and hardcore players? Are there any spikes or drops in difficulty that could affect enjoyment?
